The
Community Health Workers of Comunidades Latinas
Unidas En Servicio (CLUES) received the Spirit of
Collaboration Award from the Minnesota Cancer Alliance at
the Earle Brown Heritage Center in Brooklyn Center for their
outstanding work in the Latino community.
The Spirit
of Collaboration Award, given by the Minnesota Cancer
Alliance, honors a group of people who work together
effectively to positively impact and educate the Minnesota
community regarding cancer. The community health workers of
the Diverse Racial and Ethnic Groups and Nations (DREGAN)
Project of CLUES, Blue Cross Blue Shield and ClearWay, have
provided cancer education and prevention information to
Latino communities across the state of Minnesota for nearly
ten years. The DREGAN project has now transitioned to become
the Family-Centric Health Promotion Program, a holistic
program that addresses issues such as obesity, diabetes, and
cardiovascular disease, along with cancer and tobacco
cessation.
More than a
dozen community health workers from the DREGAN/Family-Centric
Health Promotion Program attended the ceremony. One of the
community health workers, Santa Rodriguez, was chosen by her
peers to accept the award for the group. The Spirit of
Collaboration award is now displayed proudly at CLUES.
In its 27th
year of service, CLUES provides language appropriate and
culturally competent behavioral health and human services to
Latinos. The agency is ranked among the top 25 nonprofits in
the United States by Hispanic Business Magazine for
2007. CLUES provides the following programs: Mental Health
Services, Chemical Health Services, Family Health Services,
Aging Well Services, Employment Services, Latino Learning
Institute Educational Services, and Community Health Worker
Services.
