Language and Citizenship    Computer Literacy

Classes are offered on a quarterly basis in both Minneapolis and St. Paul.

                                          Minneapolis:  10:00am - 12:00noon (M, W, Th)
                                                                6:30pm - 8:30pm (M, Tu, W, Th)

                                          St. Paul:        6:30-8:30pm (M, Tu, Th)

Some classes are offered at different days of the week or at a different time based on tutor, student, and space availability. Classes have from five to thirty students depending on the level. In some cases, one-on-one tutoring is available.


Language and Citizenship Classes

Spanish Literacy Class

Description This is a Spanish literacy course for native Spanish speakers who did not attend school in their home country or did not complete their elementary education.  The students will learn how to read and write in their native language.

Literacy Class

Description This is an English literacy course. This course is intended for adults who have never taken English classes.   The students will learn the alphabet, the different sounds of the vowels and consonants, numbers, and sentence structure.

Low Beginning ESL

Description Low Beginning ESL is intended for students who have never studied the English language before but have a basic understanding of the Spanish language or their native language. This class focuses on reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, as well as pronunciation. The student will learn basic English language structures like simple present tense, present progressive tense, and the use of the verb TO BE. Through thematic units like Community, Family, Mail and Transportation Services, the students will learn how to request and give personal information, directions, descriptions of places, and to express feelings. 
Prerequisites None. It is recommended that the student have basic literacy skills in his/her native language. Students who have taken ESL classes before should take a placement test.

High Beginning ESL

Description High Beginning ESL focuses on reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, as well as pronunciation. The students will review simple present, prepositions, and adjectives.   Through thematic units like Shopping, Entertainment, and Health, the students will learn the necessary vocabulary to do their shopping, go to the doctor, describe hobbies, and express likes and dislikes.  
Prerequisites Completion of level Low Beginning or appropriate English language placement test results.

Low Intermediate ESL

Description Low Intermediate ESL focuses on reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, as well as pronunciation. The student will learn grammar structures such as future tense, adverbs, pronouns, and adjectives. Through thematic units like Getting a Job, Making Money Decisions, and Driving a Car, the students will learn the necessary vocabulary to have a job interview, understand traffic rules, and basic information related to money management and personal/family budget.   
Prerequisites Completion of level High Beginning or appropriate English language placement test results.

High Intermediate ESL

Description High Intermediate ESL focuses on reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, as well as pronunciation. The students will learn grammar structures like conditionals, the use of can, could, would, should, and must. Through thematic units like School and Civic Education, the students will learn how to express problems, concerns, and preferences, and to give their opinion on different issues.
Prerequisites Completion of level Low Intermediate or appropriate English language placement test results.

Advanced ESL

Description Advanced ESL focuses on reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, as well as pronunciation. The students will learn advanced grammar structures. Through thematic units like Education and Community Services, the students will learn how to carry on an informal conversation, handle a telephone conversation, and request information in different situations.  
Prerequisites Completion of level High Intermediate or appropriate English language placement test results.

Citizenship Test Preparation

Description This class provides preparation and practice for the oral interview, including information on U.S. history, civics, and government. This class is intended for those who have already started their citizenship paperwork and have an intermediate or higher English language level.

Description This class introduces students to basic keyboarding, word processing, Internet and e-mail functions.
