Language and Citizenship    Computer Literacy

Classes are offered on a quarterly basis in both Minneapolis and St. Paul.

             Minneapolis:  10:00am - 12:00noon (M, W, Th)
                                    6:30pm - 8:30pm (M, Tu, W, Th)

             St. Paul:        6:30-8:30pm (M, Tu, Th)

Some classes are offered at different days of the week or at a different time based on tutor, student, and space availability. Classes have from five to thirty students depending on the level. In some cases, one-on-one tutoring is available.


Language and Citizenship Classes

Spanish Literacy Class

Description This is a Spanish literacy course for native Spanish speakers who did not attend school in their home country or did not complete their elementary education.  The students will learn how to read and write in their native language.

Literacy Class

Description This is an English literacy course. This course is intended for adults who have never taken English classes and have a very limited ability to read or write.   The students will learn the alphabet, the different sounds of the vowels and consonants, numbers, and sentence structure.

Low Beginning ESL

Description Low Beginning ESL is intended for students who have never studied the English language before but have a basic understanding of the Spanish language or their native language. This class focuses on reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, as well as pronunciation. Will be able to ask and respond to basic phrases spoken slowly and repeated often. Will be able to recognize and write letters and numbers and read and understand common sight words. Will be able to name their own address. Will be able to handle routine entry-level jobs that do not require oral or written communication in English and in which all tasks are easily demonstrated.
Prerequisites None. It is recommended that the student have basic literacy skills in his/her native language. Students who have taken ESL classes before should take a placement test.

High Beginning ESL

Description High Beginning ESL focuses on reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, as well as pronunciation. Will have some simple oral communication abilities using basic learned phrases and sentences. Will be able to read and write letters and numbers and a limited number of basic sight words and simple phrases related to immediate needs. Will be able to handle routine entry-level jobs that involve only the most basic oral or written communication in English and in which all tasks can be demonstrated.  
Prerequisites Completion of level Low Beginning or appropriate English language placement test results.

Low Intermediate ESL

Description Low Intermediate ESL focuses on reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, as well as pronunciation. Will be able to understand simple learned phrases easily and some new simple phrases containing familiar vocabulary, spoken slowly with frequent repetition. Will be able to read and interpret simple material on familiar topics. Will be able to read and interpret simple directions, schedules, signs, maps and menus. Will be able to fill out forms requiring basic personal information and write short simple notes and messages based on familiar situations. Will be able to handle entry-level jobs that involve some simple oral and written communication but in which tasks can also be demonstrated and or clarified orally.
Prerequisites Completion of level High Beginning or appropriate English language placement test results.

High Intermediate ESL

Description High Intermediate ESL focuses on reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, as well as pronunciation. Will be able to follow oral directions in familiar contexts. Will have limited ability to understand on the telephone. Will be able to understand learned phrase easily and new phrases containing familiar vocabulary. Will be able to read and interpret simplified and some authentic material on familiar subjects. Will be able to write messages or notes related to basic needs. Will be able to fill out basic medical forms and job applications. Will be able to handle jobs and or training that involve following basic oral and written instructions and diagrams if they can be clarified orally.
Prerequisites Completion of level Low Intermediate or appropriate English language placement test results.

Advanced ESL

Description Advanced ESL focuses on reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, as well as pronunciation. Will be able to understand and communicate on the telephone on familiar topics. Will be able to participate in conversations on a variety of topics. Will be able to read and interpret simplified and some non-simplified materials on familiar topics. Will be able to interpret simple charts, graphs, and labels; interpret a payroll stub; and complete a simple order form; fill out medical information forms and job applications.    Will be able to write short personal notes and letters and make simple log entries. Will be able to handle jobs and job training situations that involve following oral and simple written instructions and multi-step diagrams and limited public contact. Will be able to read a simple employee handbook. People at the upper end of this score range are able to begin GED prep in English.
Prerequisites Completion of level High Intermediate or appropriate English language placement test results.

Citizenship Test Preparation

Description

This class provides preparation and practice for the oral interview, including information on U.S. history, civics, and government. This class is intended for those who have already started their citizenship paperwork and have an intermediate or higher English language level. 

 
Prerequisites Citizenship application completed; Intermediate or higher English language level

Description This class introduces students to basic keyboarding, word processing, Internet and e-mail functions.
