Education Department
The Education Department is an important
component in broadening educational opportunities available
to Latinos in Minnesota. Adults wishing to improve their
English language skills, prepare for the U.S. citizenship
exam, or improve basic Spanish literacy skills, may enroll
in the free classes year-round during the day or evening, in
either the Minneapolis or St. Paul CLUES offices. Students
are given speaking and reading tests to determine their
appropriate level of instruction. All classes are culturally
and linguistically sensitive, and accommodate various
learning styles and levels of education.
Committed volunteers and partnerships with
community agencies and corporations have always been
important to the success of the Education Department. In
2008, over 174 volunteer tutors provided over 5,218 hours of
service to more than 640 adult English as Second Language
(ESL) students. An exchange of knowledge with a variety of
our partners has helped to strengthen classes and allows the
Department to share expertise and resources with other
community organizations.
