Latino
Learning Institute
The Latino Learning Institute is an important
component in broadening educational opportunities available to
Latinos in Minnesota. Adults wishing to improve their English
language skills, complete the General Equivalency Degree (GED),
prepare for the U.S. citizenship exam, or improve basic spanish literacy
skills, may enroll year-round in day or evening classes at either
Minneapolis or St. Paul CLUES offices. In addition, the
Institute offers a special English language class to Latino
elders. Students are given placement and reading tests to
determine their appropriate level of readiness, and their learning
level is evaluated through mastery tests. All classes are
culturally and linguistically sensitive, and accommodate various
learning styles and levels of education.
Committed volunteers and partnerships with
community agencies and corporations have always been important to
the success of the Institute. In 2005, over 547 volunteer
tutors provided over 7,703 hours of instruction to more than 2,455 adult English as Second Language (ESL) students.
Through a variety of partnerships and an exchange of knowledge with
these partners, it has helped to strengthen classes and allows the
Institute to share expertise and resources with other community
organizations.
