Education Department
CLUES’ Education Department, particularly our basic ESL and occupational ESL courses, remove language barriers that diminish job opportunities for our clients. Many of our clients speak little-to-no English and face substantial difficulties in attaining employment. Other clients do speak English, but need to develop a stronger, more specialized command of the English language in order to advance beyond entry-level jobs. Many of these clients face the challenge of attending ESL classes due to their need for child supervision services while they attend classes. Due to a 3-year commitment of AmeriCorps Vista services, CLUES will be able to respond to this need from 2010 onwards by offering parents enrolled in ESL day classes the opportunity of bringing their children with them. While parents learn English, their children will be engaged in early childhood learning activities in a fun, interactive environment. Education Services also offers Spanish literacy classes for Spanish-speaking adults who struggle with literacy in their native language, U.S. Citizenship exam preparation classes for adult immigrants and refugees planning to attend a citizenship interview scheduled by the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (BCIS), and computer literacy classes for instruction on basic computer skills, including keyboarding, word processing, and Internet and e-mail use.
