Línea Legal Latina Expands Services at CLUES Minneapolis

CLUES is pleased to announce the opening of Línea Legal Latina (“LLL”) at CLUES in Minneapolis, 720 East Lake Street, Minneapolis, MN, 55406. The free hotline, staffed by bi-lingual attorneys, provides a coordinated legal “first responder” system for low income Spanish-speaking individuals seeking legal advice or brief legal services. To receive help, Spanish-speaking individuals can call (651) 379-4223; the phone number is the same for both locations. LLL's Hotline hours are Tuesday 11-2 and Wednesday 4-6pm. Weekly Thursday clinics in St. Paul are held 11-1pm and Minneapolis 5-7pm; clients must call the hotline to get an appointment for these clinics.

 

  • New Tobacco Research Finds Minnesota’s Latino Population Smoking Significantly Less than General Population

    Results from the first quantitative study measuring tobacco use in Minnesota’s Latino communities were released today by Comunidades Latinas Unidas En Servicio (CLUES), Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota (Blue Cross) and ClearWay MinnesotaSM. The report, titled “Tobacco Use in Minnesota: A Quantitative Survey of Members of Minnesota’s Latino Communities” found adult Latinos overall are smoking at a rate lower than that of Minnesota’s general adult population—13 percent as compared to 17 percent. The Latino smoking rate equates to more than 25,000 Latinos who still smoke. Additionally, the report found that only 4 percent of Latina women smoke, a considerably lower rate than the 16 percent of women who smoke in the general population.

 

  • Aging Well Services of CLUES Honors Veterans

    On Tuesday, November 11th, Veteran’s Day, the Aging Well Services of CLUES hosted a program in special honor of Hispanic American Veterans. A Marine Detail from the 4th Regiment, Military Police, conducted a flag-folding ceremony and then presented the American Flag to CLUES. Joe Medina, a 94 year-old Mexican-American WWII Veteran, received the Stars and Stripes on behalf of CLUES. The American Flag will be on display at Aging Well Services Center to honor America and as a perpetual recognition of the service by all Veterans, especially Latino Veterans. A conversation with a panel of Latino Veterans and active service personnel followed the ceremony, including presentations by Anibal Matos, Fernando Franco, Enrique Monjarrez, Louis Garza, and Joe Medina. All presenters expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to be recognized, and heartfelt honor to serve the United States of America.
     

  • President of CLUES named in Minnesota’s “100 Most Influential Health Care Leaders” by Minnesota Physician Newspaper

Jesse Bethke Gomez, MMA, President of Comunidades Latinas Unidas En Servicio (CLUES), was named as one of Minnesota’s “100 Most Influential Health Care Leaders” by Minnesota Physician newspaper. Mike Starnes, Publisher of Minnesota Physician, said: “We conduct this feature once every four years to help illustrate the scope and breadth of the health care delivery system here in Minnesota. We want to help provide an understanding of what the health care systems delivers, show what a wide range of care is provided, and highlight the individuals involved in providing care in different ways. It gives an overview of different businesses and individuals who make up the delivery system and helps Minnesotans to better utilize the system.”

The Resource Development team of Comunidades Latinas Unidas En Servicio (CLUES) re-configured to include three new Development & Marketing Managers. Karla Bachmann, Krista Miller, and Erin Pavlovic were recently promoted to these positions. Kathleen Westerhaus, Vice President of Resource Development, will continue to lead the team with the goal of increasing the agency’s operating budget through general operating, individual giving, capital and endowment campaigns.

Westerhaus to Vice President, Resource Development. Ms. Westerhaus has worked for CLUES since September 2005 in the areas of Development and Marketing, and has contributed to the organizational growth of CLUES. The Consulate of Mexico in Saint Paul named Jesse Bethke Gomez , president of Comunidades Latinas Unidas En Servicio (CLUES), as the distinguished recipient of the Ohtli Recognition.  The Ohtli Recognition is given to people who have dedicated the majority of their personal and professional lives to bridging the gap for Mexicans living outside their country of origin. “Ohlti” is the Nahuatl word for “pathway.”

Chicanos Latinos Unidos En Servicio (CLUES) President Jesse Bethke Gomez signed the lease agreement for the Consulate of Mexico in Saint Paul on Monday, April 18 at 10:00 a.m.  U.S. Senator Norm Coleman, Bill Harper, Chief of Staff to Congresswoman Betty McCollum, Saint Paul Mayor Randy Kelly, CLUES Board Member Patrick Kelly, and Rob Kost of United Properties were present for this historic event.
